Leishmaniasis research by parasitological lymph node examination, PCR and species characterization by RFLP-PCR in municipal shelter dogs previously submitted to immunochromatographic testing

Este estudio investigó la infección por Leishmania spp. en 153 perros de un refugio municipal ubicado en una zona endémica, previamente evaluados como no reactivos mediante inmunocromatografía. Se utilizaron el examen parasitológico de ganglios linfáticos y la PCR-RFLP dirigida al gen de la quitinasa para el diagnóstico y la caracterización de la especie. El examen parasitológico detectó amastigotes en el 3,3% de los perros, mientras que la PCR confirmó la infección en el 1,3%, con una alta concordancia entre los métodos (98%; Kappa = 0,563; p < 0,001). El análisis por RFLP identificó la especie como Leishmania infantum chagasi. La presencia de signos clínicos no se asoció significativamente con los resultados positivos. Los resultados demuestran la circulación del parásito incluso en perros con pruebas serológicas negativas, lo que evidencia la limitación del uso aislado de pruebas rápidas y la necesidad de adoptar protocolos diagnósticos combinados y más sensibles en refugios ubicados en zonas endémicas para un control eficaz de la Leishmaniasis Visceral Canina.
