This article presents a quantitative study on student dropout in undergraduate programs at the Federal Institute of Bahia (IF Baiano), Campus Guanambi, between 2015 and 2021. The research adopts an integrative review approach, using data from students who dropped out of their courses, aiming to understand the factors contributing to dropout—a recurring issue in public institutions. The methodology included a literature review and the application of a semi-structured questionnaire. The results indicate that financial difficulties, the challenge of balancing professional and academic demands, and failures in complex subjects are the main factors leading students to abandon their courses. The study highlights the urgency of actions to promote student persistence and completion, suggesting the need for interventions that take into account the specificities of each course and students’ circumstances. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of dropout in higher education, offering insights for broader reflections on institutional policies aimed at reducing dropout, promoting student retention, and strengthening a free, public, and high-quality higher education system.
