The Psychological Assessment in Southern Maranhão: An Instrument of Social Justice for Families in Vulnerability

Psychological assessment services in Brazil face the paradox of being constitutive of the profession's identity while remaining inaccessible to populations in socioeconomic vulnerability. This study aims to report the experience of a free child psychological assessment service, anchored in an ethical-political perspective sensitive to inequalities. The process, conducted between October 2023 and May 2025 with 11 children referred by the health and education networks, critically integrated the application of standardized instruments, interviews with family members, and clinical observation, utilizing data triangulation.
The results demonstrate that the service's identity and effectiveness are sustained by three interrelated pillars: technical-methodological rigor, relational continuity – where qualified listening constitutes an uninterrupted causal trajectory of care – and the preservation of its essential function of legitimizing invisible suffering and mediating access to rights. It is concluded that the evaluative practice, when conducted in this manner, transforms the report into an instrument of social empowerment and inclusion, demonstrating that the transformation of life trajectories and the permanence of social commitment are not mutually exclusive. Therefore, the social essence of Psychology as a promoter of justice and citizenship is reaffirmed through a practice that critically engages with the concrete reality of families.
