Abstract

Inadequate use of the voice, both in speech and singing, can compromise vocal health and directly affect the professional performance of individuals who use their voice as their main work instrument. This risk is even greater among popular singers who often begin their careers without the necessary technical training. This study aimed to verify the main complaints and vocal habits of forró pé de serra singers. This is an observational, cross-sectional and descriptive study. The sample consisted of 20 forró pé de serra singers, living in the state of Alagoas, selected randomly and by convenience. The volunteer singers answered a questionnaire containing objective questions regarding complaints and vocal habits. The inclusion criteria were: being a forró pé de serra singer, being between 18 and 60 years old, having at least one year of experience in the area and currently singing. The data obtained regarding vocal complaints revealed that 70% of the participants felt their voices tired after singing, 50% felt hoarse, and only 10% underwent speech therapy. Regarding habits, 90% of the individuals consumed alcoholic beverages while singing, 10% were smokers, none of them took or had taken singing lessons, and only 15% practiced physical activity. These findings indicate the urgent need for preventive and educational actions aimed at this population, as well as greater dissemination of the benefits of preparing the singing voice with a speech therapist and singing teacher.
