Abstract

Dental biofilm is a crucial factor in the development of periodontal diseases, and its formation is influenced by both oral hygiene and diet. In this context, the Amazonian diet, which includes fruits rich in antioxidants and vegetable oils with anti-inflammatory properties, may have a protective effect on periodontal health. This article aimed to examine how the Amazonian diet and oral hygiene affect the formation of dental biofilm and its progression to periodontal diseases. This is a literature review study, based on scientific articles published from 2020 to 2025. The results show that dietary patterns rich in polyphenols, antioxidant vitamins, calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D, combined with proper oral hygiene practices, decrease gingival inflammation, alveolar bone loss, and the progression of periodontitis. Furthermore, experimental research indicates that Amazonian foods, such as açaí and copaiba, have adjuvant characteristics in preventing periodontal damage. The integration between nutrition and oral hygiene practices is essential for the control of dental biofilm and the promotion of periodontal health. This highlights the importance of considering not only cultural and regional aspects of diet but also preventive oral hygiene measures.
