Abstract

This article discusses the issue of economic development in a town with a small population, after the closure of one of its main companies, if not the most important company in the industrial sector of the city. It is proposed as an objective to analyze the economic development of the municipality of Tapera/RS after the closing of the Curtume Mombelli. The following specific objectives are listed: To describe the trajectory of the Mombelli tannery in the municipality of Tapera/RS (Beginning, peak and closure); characterize the contribution of the Mombelli tannery to the development of the municipality of Tapera during its operation and identify which sectors of the municipality of Tapera boosted its development after closing the Mombelli tannery. A field research was carried out with a qualitative and quantitative descriptive approach. The research found that the Mandelli tannery for decades was the main economic activity in the municipality of Tapera/RS, but after its closure, the economic development of the municipality was rebuilt through other economic activities such as through the agricultural sector, the industries of the metalworking sector, the precast concrete industries and retail and wholesale trade.
