Abstract

Introduction: Circus arts impose physical and psychological demands that may be associated with symptoms of anxiety and depression. Objective: This study aimed to analyze these symptoms in circus arts practitioners, considering practice experience and possible differences between sexes. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted at a public artistic education institution in Goiânia, Goiás, Brazil, including 17 practitioners (7 men and 10 women; 30.6 ± 5.3 years). Anxiety symptoms (trait and state) were assessed using the State–Trait Anxiety Inventory, and depressive symptoms were evaluated using the Beck Depression Inventory. Descriptive statistics and nonparametric tests were applied (p < 0.05). Results: Moderate levels of anxiety and mild depressive symptoms were observed. A statistically significant difference was identified only for trait anxiety, with higher scores among practitioners with less than one year of experience and lower scores among those with more than three years of practice. No differences were found between sexes. Conclusion: Circus arts practitioners present moderate anxiety symptoms and mild depressive symptoms, particularly in the early stages of practice.
