Introduction: The use of cosmetic products is widespread, and these formulations often contain components that favor microbial proliferation, such as water, lipids, proteins, and vitamins. The shared use of these products in store displays poses a potential health risk, as it may contribute to the dissemination of pathogenic microorganisms. Although the Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency (Anvisa) establishes microbiological acceptability limits for cosmetics, the collective use of such materials represents an aggravating factor for contamination. In this context, the present study aimed to investigate the presence of pathogenic microorganisms in makeup products exposed for public use in stores located in the city of Manaus, Brazil. Objectives: To evaluate the microbiological quality of makeup products displayed in commercial establishments in Manaus by identifying the presence of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli in the collected samples, characterizing the isolated strains morphologically and microscopically, and discussing the sanitary risks associated with the shared use of these products. Methodology: Samples of different types of makeup products were collected from stores located in Manaus. For strain isolation, Mannitol Salt Agar, selective for Staphylococcus aureus, and Eosin Methylene Blue (EMB) Agar used for the isolation of Escherichia coli were employed. The samples were incubated for 48 hours at 37 °C and subsequently subjected to Gram staining for morphological and microscopic examination. Colonies exhibiting suggestive characteristics were documented and described according to the microbiological literature. Results and Discussion: The results indicated significant bacterial growth on Mannitol Salt Agar, with the identification of Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus spp., and filamentous bacteria resembling Nocardia spp., confirming contamination of the analyzed samples. No growth was observed on EMB Agar, suggesting the absence of Escherichia coli. These findings demonstrate that shared makeup products may pose a microbiological risk, particularly when handled without adequate hygiene practices. Conclusion: The shared use of these products facilitates the dissemination of potentially pathogenic microorganisms, highlighting the need for good hygiene practices, sanitary education, and active surveillance by competent regulatory authorities.
