Treatment-Resistant Depression: The Role of Ketamine and Psychedelics

This article aims to analyze the role of psychedelics and ketamine in treatment-resistant depression (TRD), which consists of a form of Major Depressive Disorder that does not respond to conventional therapies. Approximately half of the patients treated for this disorder do not respond well to standard pharmacological treatments, which leads to the recurrence of depressive episodes and results in recurrent depressive disorder.Currently, the pharmacological therapy for this condition is almost exclusively based on the monoaminergic theory. In this context, other drugs have been used to explore new therapeutic approaches for this disorder, relying on different pathophysiological mechanisms beyond the role of monoamines.The objective of this work is to review the new therapeutic interventions for treatment-resistant depression, focusing on innovative approaches such as ketamine and psychedelics. This is a systematic review that searches the literature, evaluates the quality of evidence, provides a concise synthesis of data, and ultimately publishes the results.
