Abstract

The growing concern with sustainability has driven research into biodegradable dental materials to reduce the environmental impact of clinical practice. This article aims to analyze the main trends in these materials and discuss their potential environmental effects in the Amazon region. It is an integrative literature review that evaluated original articles, reviews, and technical documents published between 2017 and 2025 in national and international databases. Studies on life cycle analysis (LCA), clinical performance, economic feasibility, and the use of regional resources were considered. The results indicate that biobased materials offer benefits such as lower greenhouse gas emissions and reduced dependence on fossil polymers, although they still face challenges related to durability, mechanical strength, and cost. In the Amazon, the possibility of using local raw materials for biomaterial development stands out, but this requires research investments, public policies, and proper waste management protocols. It is concluded that the transition to sustainable dentistry depends on the integration of technological innovation, professional training, and regulatory frameworks.
