Bacterial resistance is one of the greatest threats to global public health, exacerbated by the improper use of antimicrobials in dentistry, both through unnecessary prescriptions and self-medication. This phenomenon is particularly alarming in the Amazon, a region where geographic barriers, socioeconomic disparities, and limited access to healthcare services contribute to the indiscriminate use of antibiotics. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between dental self-medication and bacterial resistance, taking into account the social, cultural, and clinical factors that promote this practice. This is a qualitative study with a descriptive and exploratory approach, conducted through a bibliographic and documental review of national and internation al sources, as well as technical documents from health organizations. The analysis revealed that self-medication is highly prevalent, often associated with the reuse of previous prescriptions and the purchase of medications without a formal prescription. Furthermore, it was found that unnecessary prophylactic prescriptions by dentists contribute to worsening the problem. It is concluded that public policies and educational strategies are essential to reduce the irrational use of antibiotics and combat bacterial resistance.
