Abstract

Introduction: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a complex phenomenon involving physical, psychological, and social aspects, directly impacting maternal health, the mother-baby bond, and family dynamics. It differs from the baby blues (BB). Although common and transient, it shares initial symptoms with PPD but is less intense and of limited duration. Objective: To identify the characteristic and differential symptoms and signs of postpartum depression (PPD) and the baby blues (BB) in the literature. Method: This is a qualitative, descriptive, and exploratory study, as well as a narrative literature review. The following databases were consulted: BVS, Pepsic, Scielo, and Redalyc, as well as books and theses relevant to the topic. The following keywords were used: postpartum depression, baby blues, and maternal mental health. Results: The review indicated that, although BB is a transient and physiological condition, PPD represents a mental disorder with the potential to cause significant harm to maternal health, the mother-baby bond, and child development. BB affects a large proportion of postpartum women and tends to resolve spontaneously, while PPD requires specialized intervention. Conclusion: Despite similar initial symptoms such as sadness, irritability, and frequent crying, BB is characterized by early onset, mild intensity, and spontaneous resolution within two weeks, while PPD has a longer duration, intensity, and functional impact. Recognizing these differences is essential for early diagnosis and targeted interventions. Correct identification during the postpartum period is the first step to ensuring effective and integrated maternal health care.
