Abstract

Between 2013 and 2022, Brazil faced a series of environmental disasters with major social, economic, and ecological repercussions, the most emblematic of which were the dam collapses in Mariana (2015) and Brumadinho (2019), in addition to fires and floods associated with climate change. This article aims to analyze the main environmental disasters that occurred in Brazil during this period, highlighting their causes, impacts, and the response of public policies. The methodology included a literature review, document analysis, and collection of secondary data from official agencies and technical reports. The results indicate recurring failures in environmental monitoring, in holding private agents accountable, and in the effectiveness of mitigation and prevention actions. It is concluded that the recurrence of disasters reflects not only natural events or isolated accidents, but also an unsustainable development model combined with institutional fragility and the relaxation of environmental regulations.
